What is a bunion? A bunion is a boney protrusion located at the base of the big toe. It can cause pain and is often a result of poorly fitting shoes. There are severe and mild bunions, ranging in how much pain they cause and their size.

Shoes that crowd the toes are especially problematic for causing bunions. Bunions are also a result of genetics.

Severe bunions can cause sharp pain, whereas mild bunions may appear large but do not have pain. They severity of a bunion is measured by the severity of the intermetatarsal angle, which is an angle created between the first metatarsal and second metatarsal bones.
